New Urbanism

Imagine a town where vehicles are virtually unnecessary. Residents stroll or ride bicycles along tree-lined sidewalks and neighbours get to know each other on their front porches or at the nearby park. Men and women can walk to the office; children can walk to school, and families can walk to shops, restaurants, and entertainment. It’s a community that nurtures quality of life. These are the characteristics of New Urbanism, the architectural model for Camana Bay. Not truly “new,” New Urbanism is based on town planning principles from centuries long past.

This is an architectural style not defined by an aesthetic, but rather by purpose. New Urbanism promotes “walkability,” the ability to satisfy daily needs of work or school, shopping, dining, and recreation all within walking distance of home. Streets and walkways are interconnecting, offering a safe and scenic stroll or bike ride. Numerous parks and courtyards nurture social interaction and a sense of community. Traffic is minimal, which helps to reduce the impact on the environment. Together, these qualities ensure that New Urbanist communities, like Camana Bay, provide a high quality of living.
