At the Cinema: A love triangle and secrets revealed

Coming to Camana Bay Cinema starting 8 April, awarding-winning director Joe Wright ("Pride and Prejudice," "Darkest Hour") takes on a classic love triangle with "Cyrano," the film adaptation of Erica Schmidt’s stage musical with music and lyrics by members of the indie rock band, The National. Peter Dinklage is Cyrano de Bergerac, secretly in love with his childhood friend Roxanne (Haley Bennett) who falls in love at first sight with Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). The tale is one we know, but this retelling draws in audiences with its spectacular cinematography, costumes, set design, music and cast.

The film is familiar territory for Bennett and Dinklage, who performed their roles on stage as well. In fact, one could call the production a family affair as Schmidt is Dinklage’s wife in real life and Wright and Bennett have been an item since 2018.

Ten points to Hufflepuff! The Wizarding World returns to the big screen this month with "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore."

Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is building an army in preparation for his war against the unsuspecting Muggles. Meanwhile, Dumbledore assembles a motley crew of witches, wizards and a Muggle (Jacob Kowalski’s back) to take down Grindelwald. Why does a phoenix come to Credence? Is he a Dumbledore? What has Dumbledore been hiding? And why does Dumbledore want Kowalski to have a wand?! All our burning questions will be answered starting 15 April.

The end of the month sees "Memory" open on 29 April. The action thriller, based on the Belgian film, "The Memory of a Killer," stars Liam Neeson playing an assassin with a conscience. Need I say more?

KIDS CLUB
This month’s Kids Club features Disney classics, and a DreamWorks favourite. As a Disney Pixar fan, I have "Monsters, Inc." on my must-see-again list. I love the creative take on a childhood fear of monsters in the closet. Billy Crystal and John Goodman are brilliant as Mike and Sully, who find themselves in trouble when a “dangerous child” ends up on the scare floor. You can catch Monsters, Inc. on the mornings of 23 and 30 April.

CLASSICS
Peter Jackson’s "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy is made to be seen on the big screen and thanks to Classics @ The Cinema, you can see them all this month. The epic fantasy films, based J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel originally published in three volumes, feature groundbreaking special effects while taking viewers on a humble hobbit’s journey to save Middle-earth. The star-studded cast includes Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean and Cate Blanchett. Don’t miss this chance to experience the "Fellowship of the Ring" on 12 April, "The Two Towers" on 19 April and "The Return of the King" on 26 April.

This article will be published in the April 2022 print edition of Camana Bay Times.
