Camana Bay continues to expand its sustainability initiatives through accessible recycling facilities across the Town Centre, making it easier for residents, tenants and visitors to reduce waste and help protect Cayman’s natural environment.

The recycling programme accepts a wide range of materials, including paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and tin and aluminium cans. Clearly labelled bins are located in convenient areas to encourage participation and make recycling a seamless part of daily routines.

One of the main public drop-off points is in the Emeritus parking lot on Emeritus Drive, directly across from the main parking lot near Camana Bay Cinema. This central location provides a simple and accessible option for anyone visiting the Town Centre. In addition, Foster’s Camana Bay offers disposal bins for plastic items, as well as aluminium and cardboard.

All recyclables collected through these facilities are handled by the Department of Environmental Health and processed at the recycling area at the George Town Landfill before being shipped overseas. This ensures materials are diverted from landfill and given a second life, supporting Cayman’s broader waste-reduction goals.

Tin and aluminium are among the most sustainable materials to recycle. These metals can be recycled infinitely without losing quality, making them a more environmentally responsible choice than many paper or plastic alternatives. Aluminium, in particular, takes approximately 500 years to oxidise in a landfill, yet it can be recycled into a new product in as little as 60 days.

Plastic recycling in the Cayman Islands focuses on Types 1 and 2, which are commonly found in beverage and household containers. Plastics are typically marked with a number from one to seven inside a triangle.

Paper products accepted at Camana Bay include office paper, newspapers and inserts, brochures, magazines, boxboard and corrugated cardboard. Cardboard should be flattened before being placed in designated bins to maximise space and efficiency. Items contaminated with food, such as paper plates, coffee cups, pizza boxes, waxed paper or wet paper, should be disposed of in the general waste.

Glass items can be dropped off at the DEH drop-off area in the cinema parking lot.

Behind the scenes, Camana Bay also recycles significant volumes of cardboard generated by its retailers, restaurants and offices each day, further reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Battery recycling is another key initiative, with designated drop-off points located in the lobby areas of 80 Nexus Way, 62 Forum Lane and Foster's at Camana Bay, providing a safe way to dispose of used batteries and prevent harmful materials from entering the environment.

“Creating a sustainable community requires practical solutions and strong partnerships,” said Camana Bay Property Manager Dave McKay. “By making recycling convenient and accessible, and by working closely with national waste management efforts, we are helping to reduce our environmental impact and support a cleaner Cayman for future generations.”

Through ongoing investment in recycling and waste reduction, Camana Bay continues to support environmental responsibility while encouraging the community to take simple steps that make a meaningful difference.
