Isle Style: What's "Twee" fashion?

Trends come and go … and then come back again, often with a slightly new spin on the previous iteration.

One of the latest fashion trends making a return is the "Twee." We can thank reminiscent millennials on social media for this one.

For most of those who are a part of Gen Z, this is the first time they’re getting to experience this trend, but for most millennials, it’s a throwback to the late 2000s.

The word "twee" is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute or quaint.”

Apply that definition to fashion, and you’re met with playful, preppy, moderately vintage looks.

Various celebrities are known for touting this aesthetic, including American actress and musician Zooey Deschanel and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

Originally, this trend was predominately worn by the slenderest of bodies. Now, it’s transcending body shapes everywhere, with many types adding their own Twee-take.

Here are some signature pieces that help construct this style as it makes its comeback.

TIGHTS
Tights – or stockings or pantyhose – are a commonly used layer. Worn under a short dress or a seasonless pair of shorts, it gives the illusion of added length to an outfit while providing a playful flair.

BOLD COLLARS
Enter the vintage element. Collars give an additional layer to the outfit when it’s supersized. Whether it’s detachable or attached to a blouse, big collars are a statement piece and should be recognised as such.

FIT-AND-FLARE DRESSES
One of the most playful pieces of clothing to own is a fit-and-flare dress that is fitted through the waist and then flares out around the hips. When wearing this type of dress, there’s a natural urge to twirl as you embrace your inner Marilyn Monroe. With these dresses, you can go with fun design patterns or vivid colours, or you can choose a classic solid dark colour like black or navy.

FANCY FLATS
No Twee-fit is complete without a pair of loafers, ballet flats or Oxfords. They provide practical comfort, a sleek, clean look and pair perfectly with most combos in this trend. Add a pair with a chunky heel and step it up a notch.

If you want to try out this trend or bring it back to your closet, you can find variations of these items in the retail stores of Camana Bay, including Forever Summer, Red's Emporium, NKY, SOLES Shoe Salon, Amé and Flagship by Vertu.
