National Pi Day is 14 March, so why not enjoy a slice of pie?

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant pi. It's observed on the 14th day of the third month of the year since 3, 1 and 4 (3/14) are the first three digits of pi (3.14).

What does pi have to do with pie? Nothing, really. But we don't need much arm-twisting to seek out our favourite confectionary. You can find baked pies at several places around Camana Bay, including Jessie's Juice Bar, Petit Paris and Foster's, among others.

At Foster's bakery in Camana Bay, you'll be greeted by the aroma of freshly baked pies. Their offerings boast an impressive selection of classics such as apple, pumpkin and pecan pies. These timeless favourites never go out of style and are perfect for those seeking a taste of nostalgia.

If you're looking heat up the oven yourself and get baking at home, the experts say it's relatively easy to make sure you end up with the perfect pie.

“Common pie pitfalls include overworking the dough, which can lead to a tough crust; using an overly sweet or runny filling; and not preheating the oven properly," said Paula Stonoga, Foster's pastry chef.

Stonoga also advises to avoid overbaking as it can result in a dry or burnt pie.

"Following a recipe closely and being mindful of these factors can help you avoid common pitfalls,” she said, adding that the key to a perfect pie lies in a few essential elements: a flaky crust, a flavourful filling and precise baking.

Beyond the classics, Foster's also offers an array of options such as quiche and hand pies. They also offer gluten-free and vegan pie choices.

"We offer our customers the option to pre-order any kind of pie," Stonoga said. “Our pies are also available to order online.”
